The press and perceptions

On October 29, our developer hosted a block party for our complex (Pacific Cannery Lofts), the two adjacent properties and the extended neighborhood.  It was a blast!  We met a lot of great people and enjoyed the fare provided by local merchants including Linden Street Brewery, Brown Sugar Kitchen, Namie's Kitchen, Urban Legend Cellars, Galatea Cafe and Scream Sorbet.

Although attendance was affected somewhat by the unexpected Bay Bridge closing, the event did provide an opportunity for the
Prescott Oakland Point neighborhood to receive some well deserved press including two San Francisco Chronicle articles located in the real estate section and Chip Johnson's Tuesday, 11.03.09 column highlighting the Central Station Development.

Unfortunately it also generated many cruel and derogatory statements about our new community and the people who have called it home much longer than we have.

My immediate reaction to the negativity was one of anger and frustration. I wanted to get every one of my neighbors to vote on the comments or write responses, but what would that accomplish? One fellow blogger on this subject wrote, "there's a time-honored adage that one should "never get in a fight with a guy who buys printer ink by the barrrel.""

The truth is that the world is filled with people who would rather comment from afar than engage in creating change. John and I moved here because we loved the loft, but also because we want to be part of the change we want to see in the world. Our neighborhood has its share of challenges like many others do these days. But there is also a spirit of positivity in our community that is unlike other places we've lived and we're looking forward to being involved in lifting each other up!
