The kitchen floor is in!

I'm a bit behind on blog posts and I'm sure any of you who have moved recently can understand how a few days can get away from you during a move. Complete chaos. Even John who is relatively even-keeled nearly had a meltdown trying to find the butter which had been diligently wrapped up and shoved in some box other than the one labeled "FOOD."

On Friday (just two days after move in), we were set to receive our kitchen flooring. A phone call at 7:45 a.m. alerted us to the fact that the eager installer had arrived. The chatty fellow set to work immediately--prepping the floor and creating a template to cut the material.

We chose marmoleum for it's sustainable characteristics. It's made from natural and renewable materials and requires no toxins be used during manufacture or install. What we didn't realize, however, until we started reading is that marmoleum was invented in 1860! The original product was named after it's ingredients--linoleum--from the Latin words linum (flax) and oleum (oil). It became the kleenex of floor covering. So much so that even when highly toxic PVC vinyl became popular as the cheap replacement flooring in the 60's, people still referred to their floors as being linoleum.

Our floors were complete by 4:00 p.m. and then it was time to roll back in the fridge. We are very happy with the results and look forward to getting the silver kickplates in place!
