During our first (and they tell us "unusually") cold winter with concrete floors, we decided that no new flooring would be put in any part of our home without seriously considering radiant flooring. And so the research began...
Our building has a central boiler, so installing traditional radiant flooring with water pipes was not possible. We focused instead on electric solutions and were pleasantly surprised at the options available to us.
We settled on an all-in-one-solution that would require little fiddling on John's part. The dimensions were taken and a few weeks later our floor pad arrived. The wiring was incorporated into the padding (like an electric blanket) and it was perfectly sized so that all we had to do was roll it out and secure it into place with a little cement. Well...almost.
There was a little electrical work that needed to be done to prep the installation. So, John put on his electrician's cap and got to work. I left to run errands. When I returned, I found John working in the washer and dryer closet...and the appliances had been moved. Hmm, I thought. This probably isn't good.
John had accidentally drilled through the electrical wiring for the washer and dryer and was working on repairing it before re-focusing on the floor! It seems that home ownership (even a NEW build) always comes with a few surprises.
Despite that small setback, John achieved his goal: setting up the electrical for the radiant flooring, securing the pad to the floor and cutting and placing all the tile for the bathroom. I think they look pretty good for tile remnants we found at a salvage yard!!
Congrats on warm floors in your future!
