Scrapers, squeegees and 'sicles

There are lots of explanations for the creation of new products. We've all heard the saying, necessity is the mother of invention. Some say invention arises directly from idleness, even laziness. But I think we can all agree that invention is an act of inspired creativity. And apparently Oakland's got plenty of it!

One of the more recent, and in my opinion the most colorful, Oakland inventions is the scraper bike. The first scraper bikes were created by Oakland teens who coveted, but could not afford, scraper cars -- souped-up sedans painted with bright colors and with rims so large they scrape the undercarriage.

But the scraper bike movement is more than a creative way to customize a bike, it is a social movement.  It gives youth living in dangerous communities a positive outlet that is fun and healthy, and it offers kids a sustainable group of peers that is positive and motivating. Here's a video that gives you a little more information about the Scraper Bike Movement:

What else was invented here in Oakland? Squeegees and popsicles...Fantasy Football and fortune cookie folders...and a few other surprises. Thankfully, we are not responsible for the high five. Too see the full list and read a little history on each, visit this Oakland North blog post.
