A neighborhood art project

The conversation went something like this...

Facilitator: "What should we do about signage?"

Volunteer: "We could create some banners."

Patti: "How about getting neighborhood kids to paint signs?"

Other Volunteers: "That's a good idea...we could get canvas and paints...an art project."

Facilitator: "That will take some time and effort...who has time to coordinate this?"

A kind volunteer said she'd be willing to take it on...she was an art major and had just finished school. The timing was perfect.

Patti: "What would be REALLY cool is to get sheets of plywood and have the kids paint them - each sheet with one letter - then attach them to the fence at the entrance to the event."

It sure sounded easy when it rolled off my tongue. I offered to help secure the wood and some supplies.

On the walk home after the meeting, John commented, "I'll help you get the plywood, but this is your project." It reminded me of the words my dad uttered when I asked for that golden retriever. "Ok, but you're responsible for feeding her, walking her, washing her."

It turned out I indeed hadn't fully considered all the details...size of the boards, transportation, sanding the edges, stenciling the letters, securing paint and brushes, cleanup, storage....

...but with John's unwavering and expert help, the tireless work of two other incredible volunteers, and the creative handiwork of about 15 neighborhood kids, we had ourselves some super cool signs that spelled out WELCOME ABOARD.

We were ready. Now bring on the party!

Note: sometimes it pays to be a hoarder :) The kids are wearing lab coats (old stage props) from a show John did in 2002 and much of the water-based paint was left from his shop.
