The lights are on (a "talking trash" UPDATE)

Hurray for the City of Oakland!  The lights are on!  ...well, nearly all of them.

For those of you who read my earlier article, Talking trash, you know that John and I took it upon ourselves to talk with the city about some dumping issues on Wood Street and then followed it up by preparing a map of non-working street lights, that we felt were contributing to the problem, and submitting it to the City of Oakland.  The update?  A big thank you to Oakland's Public Works for having most of those lights fixed within 3 business days of the submission!  We were delighted to actually spot the trucks working both morning and night to ensure all the issues were addressed.

Some learnings through this process...
1. The city, like the rest of the country, is low on $$ and short on staff.  They NEED the community to be involved in identifying problems and bringing them to their attention.
2. There are ways to easily participate online.  Oakland Public Works has an online submission form that you can use to make them aware of problems or issues that need to be addressed.  If you see something that needs fixin' - submit it, please.
3.  You can also participate online through SeeClickFix.  It's a website that allows you to post a problem, even add a photo if you want, or make your voice heard by voting on problems that others have submitted in your neighborhood.  Take a look at YOUR neighborhood!  Oh, and the city monitors this site...I've already received notification on my submissions that the city has the jobs in their cue.

Thank you, City of Oakland.  And neighbors...please get involved...it's just so easy and it can help our entire community!
